Another system utility tool you can use to speed up Windows XP is the defragmenter. Like disk cleanup, this tool comes with the operating system package.   It compiles all the files in your hard drive, making it easier for the system to index and access them. This will further speed up windows XP and prevent XP freezes. You might want to put it as the last on you list since it takes quite sometime to finish.

To start with, go to:

1. Start

2. Programs or All Programs

3. Accessories

4. System Tools

5. Disk Defragment

5.1 Once you have clicked on Disk Defragment,
it will give you a window that looks something like this.

5.2 To know if your hard drive needs defragmenting,
click on the “Analyze” button. It will then prompt you
if your hard drive needs defragmenting. If it does,
this Window will pop-up. Click on the
“Defragment Button to proceed.

Again, this process will take about 30 minutes to even and hour depending on the size and amount of files on your hard drive. Thus, you may want to do this last.

I have been using one of the commercial defragmenters for this task and I dont think I will ever go back to manual or scheduled defrag. Not only does it run unobtrusively in the background while other programs are being used, it also defragments under very low free space. There is no need to monitor the process or worry about incomplete defrags. Its really cool!
